Extends the theoretical and practical knowledge base for visual arts teaching and learning. Examines pedagogies used to support the development of visual arts literacy. Connects learning in the visual arts with the guiding structures of national curriculum documents and investigates issues such as addressing diversity and using new technologies. Identifies action and reflection practices that enhance visual arts learning.

Learning outcomes
At completion of this course, students will be able to:- Apply knowledge of the structure and use of The New Zealand Curriculum for effective visual arts teaching and learning in, and for, a variety of settings and purposes. (Graduating Teacher Standards 1a-1c, 2a, 2d)
- Examine a range of theories, research findings and curriculum implications for the visual arts development of diverse learners. (Graduating Teacher Standards 2a, 2c, 2d)
- Apply pedagogical content knowledge, skills and dispositions to planning, resourcing, teaching and assessment, in order to enhance the visual arts development of diverse learners. (Graduating Teacher Standards 4a-4c)
