EDCURRIC 715 - Understanding Difficulties in Number Learning
-
Course description
30 points
Critically examines how conceptual early number learning proceeds, and the key difficulties in learning number concepts and generalisations considered from a psychological perspective. There is an emphasis on the link between the language, symbols, and place-value used for instruction and the conceptual underpinnings of the mathematics to be learnt.

Course overview
This course is suitable for current and future leaders and teachers who are interested in understanding why some children experience difficulties in mathematics. This course is for you if you have a strong sense of ethical commitment to increase the mathematical progress and achievement of priority learners, and want to develop the skills to critically analyse pedagogical practices that may increase priority learners’ progress and achievement, and enhance your own professional practice. This course is important as it critically examines how conceptual early number learning proceeds, and the key difficulties faced by some learners in learning number concepts and generalisations. The relationship between language, symbols, and models/equipment is a focus of EDCURRIC 715 and illustrates the conceptual underpinnings of the mathematics currently learnt in school.

Learning outcomes
At the completion of the course, it is intended that students will be able to:- Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges that face young children in learning about number in the first three years at school.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the difficulties that students of all ages have in acquiring functional automaticity of the basic addition and multiplication tables, and show why this automaticity is essential for numeracy.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the problems students have in becoming multiplicative thinkers and how this links to the desired numeracy of school leavers.
