TO: Critical investigation into contemporary literacy issues in policy, strategy and enactment from the perspective of literacy leadership. Includes in-depth examination of the term literacy and focus on issues such as bilingualism and biliteracy, disciplinary literacy, interventions, technological change, and opportunities to learn. Requires the completion of both an independent research assignment and a practitioner investigation in own context.

Course overview
Take a wider look at the important and topical issues in NZ literacy education with this course, exploring issues such as equity and access, bilingualism, boys' achievement, critical literacy and literacy in an increasingly digital world. In this course you will pick two issues you are particularly interested in, evaluate a series of different perspectives on those issues and put forward a coherent argument for your favoured position.

Learning outcomes
At completion of this course, students will be able to:- Evaluate issues that impact on students’ access to literacy.
- Examine and critique theories, processes and practices of first and second language and literacy development and acquisition, and of bilingualism and bi -literacy.
- Critique a range of literacy interventions for students experiencing difficulties, based on theories and research in literacy education.
- Examine the issues and challenges surrounding concepts of the nature of literacy in an age of globalisation, diversity and technological change.
