An advanced examination of a range of current theories and research issues related to development in early years of childhood. Topics will include: life experiences of children within family/whanau; cognitive, communicative, social, emotional and physical development in a range of contexts.

Course overview
This transdisciplinary course explores development theories and their importance in education. It includes psychological, historical, philosophical and historical perspectives. You will engage in a range of debates about development: Is it innate (from nature) or borne of experience? Do different domains of development (eg cognitive, social and emotional) precede one and other or are they distinct from one another? What other ways can we explain childhood, children’s learning and experiences?

Learning outcomes
At completion of this course, students will be able to:- Critically analyse methods and theories of children’s development and learning in the early years.
- Critically examine contextual influences in regard to children’s development experiences and learning.
- Identify issues specifically those that relate to children’s development, learning, as well as to pedagogy and research.
