Course overview
The course is of importance to those who wish to build their knowledge of research and how it can be used to investigate real-life problems. As such it prepares students to formulate a research question of interest and relevance to them and to design an investigation that will address the question. This course attracts students from a range of backgrounds including primary and secondary teachers, EC educators and educational leaders, as well as those working in tertiary education. It is also suitable for those working within the wider educational community. The course is of relevance and importance to those who are interested in undertaking a piece of research either within the content of a Masters qualification or in their particular workplace setting. Completing the course will help develop the analytical skills necessary to engage with and in research particularly in practice settings.

Learning outcomes
At completion of this course, students will be able to:- Demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between ontological perspectives, epistemological assumptions, and methods of inquiry and knowledge claims in research.
- Demonstrate an understanding of processes associated with qualitative and quantitative modes of inquiry and research design.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the research question and subsequent research design.
- Interpret and synthesise knowledge relevant to selected practice in order to write a cogent and coherent research proposal.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical implications of undertaking research.
